How do you know if menopause has started?

Menopause typically begins between the ages of 45 and 55. The perimenopausal transition period lasts up to 10 years for most women as they near menopause. There are several key signs and symptoms to help determine if you are entering perimenopause or have started menopause:
Irregular periods - Perimenopause causes shifts in reproductive hormone levels which lead to changes in the menstrual cycle. Periods may be heavier or lighter. There can be spotting in between cycles. Cycles may shorten or lengthen. Skipped periods are common as well.

Hot flashes - Sudden feelings of body heat, flushing in the face/neck/chest and sweating episodes are classic menopausal signs. Night sweats that drench sleepwear and sheets also occur.

Vaginal/urinary changes - Declining estrogen thins vaginal tissues leading to irritation, dryness, inflammation (vaginitis), pain and light bleeding during sex. Lower estrogen can also trigger UTIs.

Emotional changes - Mood swings, irritability, anxiety, sadness and difficulty focusing are common. Depression risk increases. Stress can worsen symptoms.

Sleep disruption - Difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep are often reported due to night sweats/hot flashes

Other physical signs - Headaches, joint pain, racing heart, digestive issues, dizziness, weight gain, hair thinning/loss may be noted as hormone levels shift.
